I spent a couple of hours last night reliving my misspent youth by playing Gremlin’s “Footballer of the Year” using the Fuse ZX Spectrum emulator. The game is a fairly basic shoot and score setup involving two defenders, one, or a penalty. The latter was always the most problematic given that any attempt to steer the ball sends it over or wide of the goalposts.
The game seemed to play a little strangely in Fuse, at least I seemed to get transferred more often than I remember. I won both the First Division (Premier League for you young ‘uns) and the imaginative European Super League a several times with different teams. I didn’t have much joy in any of the European Competitions – they only appear the season after winning Division 1 or a Cup. Due to the frequency at which I was transferred, I didn’t even play a game in those competitions.
On the other hand, I did experience winning the “Footballer of the Year” title for about 5 years on the bounce.
