First obtain and mount a copy of the CM0102 iso from the publishers – its free! here: http://champman0102.co.uk/downloads.p…
You can’t just run the installer though, it won’t work – you need to install CM01/02 manually. To do this open PlayOnMac or PlayOnLinux and click the configure button in the ribbon menu.
You need to create a virtual drive to install CM01/02 on within PlayOnMac/Linux. Click the New button at the bottom left, which should open up a wizard. Click Next, select the system version of wine on the next screen, and click next again. Next call the drive whatever you want to, click next one last time, and your virtual environment is created.
Next we need to install CM01/02. Your new drive should have appeared on the left hand side of the configure screen in PlayOnMac/Linux. Select it; and choose the miscellaneous tab to the top right. On that tab select the option run a windows executable in this virtual drive. From there navigate to the CM01/02 iso that you have mounted and select the install executable, CM01/02 will install. If you have any patches to apply to the game then you can do that the same way.
Once you have installed the game switch from the miscellaneous tab of the virtual drive to the general tab. Select the “Make new shortcut from this virtual drive” button. This should identify the CM01/02 executables – install a shortcut to the game now.
You can now close the configure tab, and the shortcuts you have just added will be present in PlayOnMac/Linux – double click on one and the game will run. Remember to mount the CM01/02 iso before playing next time too.

Hi!
I have installed the game and had it working… Played it for a while and all was good!
I am now trying to launch it to play it again however I am being asked to insert the disc at the load screen… How can I get round this? Ive tried everything I can think of…
Thanks in advance for your help…
MacRetro says
Hi Ryan,
This is a really common question.
You just need to remount your iso file each time you want to play – if you are on macOS/OSX just double click on the iso, and then you will be able to launch the game as normal. Unless you dismount it you shouldn’t need to do that again until after the next time you reboot. If that doesn’t work it will be an issue with drive mapping in playonmac – but most of the time just remounting the iso fixes this 🙂
Simon says
I’m having the same problem, I’ve tried double clicking on the ISO but all that happens is the folder comes up with various files but none automatically launch the game when I double click them? Do I need to follow any of the steps in the original install video??
MacRetro says
Right Click, or CMD+click and open with DiskImageMounter
Simon says
Hi I’ve done that but all that happens is a folder pops up? Sorry I’m pretty s**t with Mac
MacRetro says
Once that happens it should be mounted on your desktop (you should see a virtual drive with your iso loaded there)

hi, I’ve managed to install cm01/02 on a Mac no problem just wondering anyone can help with installing updates into the game, following a lot of online advice but coming up short still, thanks
MacRetro says
Hi Jon,
We’ve just published a video on this here.
You can update the data, but we’ve not been successful in applying any of the Tapani updates to the CM0102 engine within PlayOnMac.
Hope that helps!

For Some Reason After Installing Playonmymac
I open the program but at the very bottom it says “Website unavailable”
Which means the configure settings then wont open to be able to install champ manager into it….
Any ideas ?
Thanks
MacRetro says
Hi Giallo,
We are getting that too, have never seen it before. Give it a couple of hours and I’m sure they’ll be back up. In theory you should be able to install CM0102 anyway, but in practice if this is a clean playonmac install there are some dependencies like Gecko that need to be downloaded and installed the first time you install a game.
Cheers 🙂

Hi,
We’ve not seen that.
It could be the cd prompt crashing – so make sure the iso is mounted.
Otherwise cmd+option+esc should let you close the game without rebooting.

Hey i just just tried to install playonmac but wasn’t able to open the application due to ‘developer not recognised’? Is it really essential to use playonmac?
site_admin says
Hi,
PlayOnMac is the best combination of cost and user friendliness.
Either:
1. Use PlayOnMac System Preferences > Security & Privacy > and authorise PoM.
2. Use Crossover instead. Video here. There is a free trial.
3. Install WINE and manually configure it (which is what both of the above are doing for you).
MacRetro
Spankmyhedgehog says
Ok great thanks!
Is it necessary to install the XQuartz the playonmac suggests?
Spankmyhedgehog says
Hi, when creating a manual virtual drive on playonmac..should i select the 32bit or 64bit? Thanks! 🙂
MacRetro says
Hi,
Yes, you need to install XQuartz – and you need a 32bit drive…. 64bit was for the future once 🙂
Rjones says
Hello after I’ve installed everything and the update it says there is not enough available system memory to create the game, any help would be appreciated
MacRetro says
Hi,
That will relate to the virtual environment created in PlayOnMac rather than your actual machine. Try creating another virtual drive, give it another go – and make sure you only create a 32 bit drive.
MacRetro
Rjones says
After a couple of tries I managed to get a game working however got up until October then the same thing. So just try and do it again yeah?
MacRetro says
Most errors result from creating a 64bit virtual drive rather than 32bit.
Are you playing with 3.9.68 data, or with updated Saturn data? If the latter, try installing, updating to 3.9.68, and see if that works better. We’ve not played the Saturn upgrade in much depth, just doesn’t feel right without Tsigalko.

I have managed to install the game. Once the game loads up I get a flash and a distorted screen which flashes.
MacRetro says
Hi Probes,
We’ve never seen this.
Make sure that you have created a 32bit drive and not a 64bit drive.
If not start again from the beginning, install CM0102, and then check that have a working game before patching it.
Sometimes you get a blank screen after switching between full screen and windowed – but that usually rectifies itself after restarting the game.

Hi, I Have the same problem (r.e. not enough memory) but am a computer illiterate moron and so can you as simply as possible explain how to make sure it’s 32 bit not 64? Thanks
MacRetro says
Hi Sean,
Try a couple of things.
In the playonmac config for the drive, try changing compatibility to Windows 98.
Try running the GDI version of the executable istal of the vanilla CM0102 one.

I’ve just installed the game but can’t seem to click on anything on the start up page ? Start new game or to the update ?
MacRetro says
Hi Cdavis,
Weird! We’ve not seen this either – although graphics can be problematic patching to higher resolution.
Usual errors relate to the initial drive creation, make sure you’ve not installed a 64bit machine first. If not then reinstall from the beginning, and make sure that you have a working game before moving on to patch it and or update the data.
Feel free to jot us an email with a screen shot.

I can open CM0102 then I select ‘start new game’, the game starts to load but freezes once the shortlists have finished loading. Any ideas?
MacRetro says
We’ve not seen this on any of our computers.
First, make sure that you have installed all of the necessary WINE add-ons – WineMono and WineGecko. Also make sure that you have created a 32bit virtual drive, and not a 64bit one.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.
MacRetro

Thanks, its difinatly a 32bit drive. How do I make sure wine mono and gecko are installed?
Kris Bartholomew says
Thanks, it is the 32 bit drive. But how do I check/get winegecko and winemono?
MacRetro says
It may not prompt to install them as you do not use a PlayOnMAc installer with CM01/02 (you can’t, it crashes).
Mono – https://www.mono-project.com/docs/getting-started/install/mac/
Gecko – https://wiki.winehq.org/Gecko

MacRetro says
Hi Kris,
Sorry about the late reply, have been working away.
One solution that has worked for others here is using the CM0102 GDI executable instead – and an extra shortcut in to the virtual drive for that. We’ve never managed to recreate this though. The only other install component you may need is X11.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi Guys,
I’ve installed the game and installed the .68 patch. At this point the games seems to run ok at the start. I’ve then tried to add the champman update for October 17, but when I click new game, I get the following error:-
v3.9.68 index. cpp 5809
Do you know why this is? I basically want the most up to date version I can get, how do I do this???
MacRetro says
Hi Darren,
Usually this happens hen you apply a data update incorrectly. The instructions for applying the update are here https://champman0102.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3863 and the latest update here https://champman0102.co.uk/showthread.php?t=3863
Spin up a fresh install, patch back to 3.9.68. Test it to make sure its works properly, and then apply the data patch.
You cannot use the Tapani patchers, they crash. We had the Saturn patch running perfectly until we got to Christmas – then everybody became 15 years younger overnight!
Let us know how you get on.

Hi everyone – is anyone having any luck with any of the Tapani based patches? In the latest Saturn update I managed to get one of his Tapani patch mods working for over a season perfectly but I’m running into issues when I restart the game after saving- the saved game starts to load but then won’t finish. I’ve demo’d with a few other restarts changing the Wine config settings eg Windows compatibility to 98 , and graphics to GID enabled etc. Then I can reload a save but will run into memory issues….Anyone making headway with this? Would be great if anyone can nail this! Thanks for any feedback on this. Stuart
MacRetro says
Hi Stuart,
We’ve had no joy with the Tapani patches – the updaters crash in WINE, though we would imagine that a Tapanified .exe and data folder would run if pasted over the originals.
We also had the Saturn update running really well – until we got to the first winter update and everybody became 16 years younger, so we pulled the install video for this. Though again, we think this might well have worked if ran from season 01/02.
MacRetro
Stuart says
Thank you very much for the quick response. I don’t fully understand what you mean by pasting the Tapanified exe and data over the originals? As far I know that is what I have been doing. Is there any chance I can access the original video you made somehow as perhaps I can check if a combination of approaches works? One thing I have been doing is pasting over harder AI tactics in the data folder before pasting in the exe file so perhaps that is causing a problem. But I’m finding no issue with the ages after the winter update it’s only when reloading a save I run into issues…
Do you know of any way to run with the original data (ie Maxim Tsigalko et al) but to have speeded up match commentary (up to x 200)
I sense we’re not too far from cracking it…. Thanks again

This usually works for us: ignore the error, crash the application using CMD + Option + Esc, when we reload it, it then opens in windowed mode.

I have followed all of the steps. When I open it, I hear the crowd noise, the main screen loads for a split second, then goes black, and there is some scrambled graphics in the bottom corner.
If I hold the left mouse button down, the screen reappears but goes again as soon as it is released, so cannot play the game. Seems like a graphics thing.

Firstly, thank you so much for your guide on how to play this insanely addictive classic!
I’ve followed all the steps and have managed to install CM0102 using PlayOnMac and updated to v.3.9.68 but I can only play the game by running the cm0102_GDI.exe file. This is great, but I’d love to patch the game to run the Saturn V7 patch so I can have current player data, but can’t as the updated .exe files needed to run the game do not work properly (graphically okay but weird laggy mouse clicking, selecting things without clicking on them etc – frustratingly unusable!)
As an alternative option, I’ve tried running the Tapani 2.21.1 patch on its own (to at least give me the improved screen resolution) but it crashes Wine.
Any ideas either on finding a GDI.exe for the V7 Saturn patch or running the Tapani patch?
Many thanks!
Tom
MacRetro says
Hey Tom,
We’ve had CM01/02 successfully running – but at the end of the first season everybody’s age dropped by 16 years! We had the instructions up for a while – but deleted them after that experience!
None of the Tapani patches run in wine (I don’t think they run using Crossover either).
You can update data only – see: How to update CM0102 data on MacOS OSX

I have also tried changing the screen resolution to every other option and the same thing happens. I have also tried to remount an ISO but still nothing.
Please help! I’ve spent hours trying to install this and REALLY want to play this game!!!

MacRetro says
Hi Gwil,
It sounds like you’ve tried most of the usual problems. Try running the GDI file instead – that seems to work in most cases where the main install does not.
Also, try configuring the wine graphics settings in the virtual drive – could be something there too.

I’m a bit late to reply to this. I may have “figured out” out how to fix this. Is your game running in full screen or windows mode? Hi there – first of all, thank you for this guide. With everything the way it is in the world, Champo has been an excellent distraction.
I’m running in to two errors – 1 game got to 2009 and then crashed so I started a new one. It seemed fine but before the season ended it too crashed and now says I need a CD. I’ve tried re-mounting the iso as you described in the above thread but all I get is a CM102 drive folder on my desktop. When I open that, it has the exe files in it but they just begin the installation process again. Is there a way for me to get my save game working again? Thanks!

Once the CM0102 drive appears on desktop, the iso is mounted – so you should be able to play at that point (no need to open up in way you describe).

Hey, you’re walkthrough is amazing, thank you for putting in the time and effort to get us all playing the greatest football management game ever! One quick question, I love so many of the updates on this, but am also super familiar with the original database. Is it possible via play on Mac to have a different virtual drive for each update? so we don’t have to delete the data and save the new data each time we want to play a different data set….any thoughts or support would be great 🙂
MacRetro says
Hi Jamie,
Yes – on Mac it is possible to create a different virtual drive for each install (or bottle if you are using crossover).
Just need to remember to rename the shortcuts so that you load the right version!
Also, if you upgrade to Catalina, 32bit support is withdrawn and neither will work properly until that is fixed in wine. We are currently using a Windows XP virtual machine in parallels to play – that also allows you to Tapani patch your install, if so inclined.
